Plans to change the uniforms of parliament police, 6 months after they were issued with new ones, have been put on hold after officers objected, calling it “a waste of taxpayers’ money.” Sixty parliament police officers gathered at the parliament building, in Dusit district, yesterday to submit a letter to the President of the National Assembly, Chuan Leekpai, to oppose the plan to change their uniforms. My Thai gf works as a computer analyst for the Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister - a pretty darn good job! Yet she has to pay for her uniform and all the ceremonial adornments she has to wear to the royal ceremonies she attends. She makes a pretty decent salary by Thai standards but these costs can really bite into her income. Why do the cops get government paid uniforms but other civil servants have to pay? Doesn’t seem fair.

There are no standard-issue pistols carried by the Royal Thai Police. Policemen must buy their own pistol and he/she must buy what is available in Thailand and what he/she can afford. If the police officer cannot afford a pistol, he may purchase one by paying in instalments through his police co-operative.
