Thaiger Posted June 8, 2022 #218501 Share Posted June 8, 2022 On Monday, just days after the requirement to wear face masks outdoors was re-imposed in Phuket province, Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha dramatically ripped off his face mask mid-speech at a tourism event in Phuket, asking the crowd, “Are you ready?” On June 1, Thailand’s Ministry of Health announced that it was no longer a requirement to wear a mask outdoors in Phuket. People in Phuket could go to the beach, public parks and stadiums mask-free for the first time in years. Will he get fined again? Minor detail: it's not a crowded environment in his immediate vicinity, but you're absolutely right in the other aspects since the law doesn't have that criterium. So he decided to violate his own law to get some applause and -- more importantly -- news coverage, and for a while he'll try to accumulate credits for acting against and finally retracting a law he himself introduced, and then use that as leverage in popularity polls (mostly involving people whose span of attention can be measured in mere months). On the positive side: it could be used as a lesson at kindergarten-level to explain the game of politics. PS: perhaps that was a bit too heavy... Being about to retract a rule (at least, that was suggested) is a good thing, it's just b) the dramatics involved and a) the fact that it distracts from the fact that it doesn't mean 1 iota with regards to cancelling the emergency decree as a whole that annoy me. It could be just me, but I don't see the emergency around anymore, and therefore no (valid) reason to maintain the power to be able to adjust laws at a whim. 2 Quote Link to comment https://talk.thethaiger.com/topic/14939-news-forum-on-off-on-off-pm-prayut-rips-off-face-mask-mid-speech-in-phuket/#findComment-218653 Share on other sites
Saunk Posted June 8, 2022 #218674 Share Posted June 8, 2022 Hopefully the outdoor mask mandate is dropped by July, if it includes indoors, even better, but I'm dubios. DiJoDavO Posted June 9, 2022 #218777 Share Posted June 9, 2022 Doesn't he hear people talk? Are you ready? People were ready a year ago! Some of the people left on The Thaiger tho, are probably booing him now and shout that they aren't ready Quote Link to comment https://talk.thethaiger.com/topic/14939-news-forum-on-off-on-off-pm-prayut-rips-off-face-mask-mid-speech-in-phuket/#findComment-218777 Share on other sites
DiJoDavO Posted June 9, 2022 #218781 Share Posted June 9, 2022 "" Are you ready?” asked the unmasked Prime Minister, igniting cheers and applause from the crowd at the Thailand Tourism Congress 2022 held at Beyond Resort Kata Hotel." He just said “Are you ready?“ without saying anything else. He was probably just hot and wanted to take it off. Some police should have walked to him and fine him because apparently it's still necessary to wear one. But nothing else was said? Still clear as mud. 1 Quote Link to comment https://talk.thethaiger.com/topic/14939-news-forum-on-off-on-off-pm-prayut-rips-off-face-mask-mid-speech-in-phuket/#findComment-218781 Share on other sites
