Residents in Ang Thong, in the central of Thailand, are so angry with officials in the Department of Rural Roads about the treacherous state of their roads that they have planted banana trees in the cracks of the tarmac in protest. It's all down to who's got their eye (or hands) on the budgets.

Near me there was a notorious piece of road that would have cyclists off every day, was like it for years whilst all around it roads were near pristine and redone every year - it turns out the shite piece of road was outside a high end block of condos owned by one of Thailands wealthiest men but he has a personal feud ongoing with the mayor of the town and the mayor decides which money is spent on which road.

If no-one stands to make a few quid, that road isn't going to get fixed - may as well sell the bananas!
