News Forum - Bangkok Governor to propose lifting of midnight close time and mask wearing

Recommended Posts

The new Bangkok Governor is pushing the CCSA to consider easing the current closing times for the capital’s nightlife, as well as asking for a similar easing of the face mask requirements. His requests follow a botched easing of mask wearing by the Phuket Governor last week where he, one day, announced a variation of the CCSA guidelines for wearing masks in outdoor spaces. Then promptly had to re-apply the full requirement of wearing masks the day after.  Whilst the Phuket Governor never said that people won’t have to wear masks in Phuket everywhere, his announcement clearly gave the impression […]

The minister of the CCSA in each province is the governor of that province. He could just as easily be talking to himself.

Actually most places are already open past midnight and have been for sometime. Practically speaking it’s to the expense of the policeman’s tips.

I can only hope he gives the population courage to question other of Thailand’s senseless rules. Of course there’s no logic to having a midnight closing time. As though covid starts magically circulating at midnight. And then he rightly points out the rule actually makes things worse because more people crowd in during the limited time.

Its a lot like when California banned even outdoor dining. It turned out people didn’t stop getting together but they just moved to individual homes rather than an outdoor restaurant which in fact drove up infections.

Or like when the Thai government banned the sale of alcohol online during the pandemic because ….  Well no one knows why, they just wanted to ban it. So if you wanted to get wine or beer or sports you had to go to the store.

Yeah, he’s doomed. How do you think it will end - disgrace, exile or jail?

I read this infuriating response from a mindless BMA bureaucrat today in BP:

“At a meeting of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) executives on Monday, Mr Chadchart asked whether it is time to allow people to stop wearing masks in open public spaces.

A response to the question came from an unnamed official from the BMA's medical department, who pointed out the need to wait until Bangkok has less than 500 new infections of Covid-19 per day.”

So rather than base a policy on science (outdoor masking does nothing) and logic under the current situation, this bureaucrat would rather adhere to an arbitrary magic number decided years ago. Why 500? It’s a nice round number. Maybe it should be 50 or 100 or 1000 or 2000. It’s not even based on infections per 100,000 and the figure itself, infections, is a made up number as well.

This statement is a perfect example how medical bureaucrats across the world have managed to lose any credibility with so much of the public.

It was time a long time ago. My friends and family won’t come visit until the mask nonsense is over. They can’t believe Thailand is so far behind the rest of the world on keeping these draconian restrictions. Covid is old news guys! We don’t care anymore!

if you go to the popular malls like siam paragon on saturday/sunday now, you'd notice people are as crowded as pre-covid (i myself won't go on sat/sun and choose weekday now to avoid infection). i may further reduce going public places if removing mask ban in public areas like shopping mall.  however to attract more tourists, i don't see why there is still USD 10000 covid insurance (it cause deterent by adding cost and inconvenience while other tourist location does not need it)and not extend or removing closing time of night establishments.

Lol, the PM and his guys are in for 8 (?) years? Only negative stuff happened and everything became only more unnecessarily difficult.

This guy is in for a week or so and good stuff is happening already.

But I doubt whether he has the power needed to make a change...
