Monkeys in Lopburi, central Thailand, are starving because tourists have stopped feeding them in fear of the “monkeypox epidemic,” despite no cases being recorded so far in the kingdom. The atmosphere of Lopburi city, famous for its monkey population, has been significantly disrupted since the monkeypox epidemic began, despite the epidemic being centred in Europe, the USA and Australia. Usually, hundreds of people visit the San Phra Kan Shrine in Lopburi every day, which is densely populated with monkeys. A merchant who sells monkey food outside the shrine said that today, May 26, a total of 30 people visited the […]

Only reason it is called Monkeypox is because that is where it was first seen - on monkeys imported from Central Africa to some research centres in the US.

Someone should tell them the gays carry it these days. I’m sure the government will be happy to crack down on us as well.

If you are not rubbing up on the soars or poking the tongue in or sleeping on puss filled bed linen you will be fine.

Edit ^ all of the above is with strangers

This is really bad scaremongering there is no monkeypox epidemic. Government needs to make smallpox vaccine available for anyone likely to be exposed to monkeypox and let people and monkeys get on with their lives.

This is just criminal behaviour by the media including the Thaiger. There is no epidemic! We are talking about less than 150 cases world wide outside the areas where it's endemic in Africa. Most of the cases are linked in the gay communities in the United States and Britain. And just to make it clear Thai monkeys and Thai rats DO NOT carry Monkey Pox! This is all a stupid beat up by the media. The WHO released a warning on the infection based on the fact that in a  normal year we only see 30 cases outside of Africa and this year there have been a little over 100. It's nothing but a huge media beat up.
