Time to correct Wiki; What is Portugal doing in that list. Chechoslowakia doesn't even exist any more.

Why so? Portugal has been dominated by two socialist parties (PS and PSD) since the 70s. In the latest elections they hold a combined 197 of the 230 seats constituting the Assembly of the Republic. Czechoslovakia is correctly placed in the former socialst states list. Nothing wrong on Wiki.

Please explain why you cannot 'justify' using a ar15 for hunting? I have explained that semi-auto rifles have been around for over 100 years. No difference other than appearance. Do you advocate banning them, and why not ban a 'bolt action' rifle - are they not still in military use and a 'battlefield weapon'?

I have never said that current laws are adequate. What I have said is that in the wake of these multiple tragedies, politics  comes into the forefront, and political points are attempted to be made, without really concerning if what they are trying to pass as law will have any actual effect on the crimes committed.

When a president who stated "the government doesn't have enough time and resources to enforce the existing laws" -  wants to create more laws, and you see when the govt. failed to enforce existing laws with dire consequences - shouldn't you question the motive?

Don't know if you caught the coverage on the NRA convention where many members were of the opinion of "let's sit and have a calm discussion, and maybe we can agree to a solution".

Of course, there are many that can't see past the rhetoric.

Yeah thats right your weapon of choice for bringing down a deer is an AR 15 because you immediately focus on the second deer which is now in a separate county from where you are standing having heard the first round go off.

Only an idiot would use a 5.56 caliber AR 15 for hunting.

Do you hunt - have you ever? You assumed hunting with a ar15, or .223 caliber equated someone would be hunting deer? Why is that? Something else I've not said. Really, you should question people who actually hunt, and what they are hunting and what weapon, why they choose to use it, before making such a blanket statement.

So, you'd be against using a .22/250, or maybe .270 caliber for hunting also? You know that in different areas of the US, the terrain would be a factor in choosing a weapon/caliber too

I've brought it up, at least a couple times that the same functioning type weapon has been in private citizens hands say, 40-50 years before a AR15 was produced and with more powerful cartridges. What has changed since 1907, say? It's dang sure not the tech. Except for cosmetics, same same. So all semi-auto, detachable magazine, rifles should be banned?

It appears to me that you're basically against private ownership of firearms. And, hey, that's your right.

We went by the firearms stores around Old Siam in Bangkok a month ago. While I realize firearms are harder to acquire there, I admit I was surprised by the number of AR15 style rifles for sale. They must be pretty popular there too.

** Forgot to add, in some states, the .223 round is not allowed for deer hunting.

Portugal is a democracy where the Social democratic party is gouverning for the moment (since the last election).
Lot of social democratic parties in Europe are part of the gouvernment: Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Danmark, Sweden...

From the Wiki URL:

Because a sovereign state is a different entity from the political party that rules that state at any given time, a country may be ruled by a socialist party without the country itself claiming to be socialist or the socialist party being written into the constitution. This has occurred in both one-party and multi-party political systems. In particular, there are numerous cases of social democratic and democratic socialist parties winning elections in liberal democratic states and ruling for a number of terms until a different party wins the elections. While socialist parties have won many elections around the world and most elections in the Nordic countries, none of those countries have adopted socialism as a state ideology or written the party into the constitution.
