The eastern Thai province of Trat has reported 11 malaria patients, 9 from Koh Chang and 2 from the Bor Rai district. The type of malaria found in the residents is the parasite plasmodium knowlesi. The disease was first detected in the local monkey population and then transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. Blood from random monkeys on Koh Chang has been tested in efforts to control the spread of the disease. I think the officers initally misdiagnosed P. falciparum by doing the standard low cost stain microscopy, which makes extremely difficult to differentiate the two strains, as the morphology is basically the same. For sure they had to sent the samples to a specific lab for PCR to identify correctly the type of Plasmodium, hence the long time required. However, it is no necessarily true that malaria from P. falciparum is more deadly than from P. knowlesi as stated in the article, both diseases are almost equally dangerous; the latter is less common than the former, but becoming increasingly concerning nowadays in SEA.

There's a typo at the end of the articles, "protest" instead of "protect".

Now you wanna make drama with monkey too right???

The monkeypox is cause by Rats and other silimar species... and Not from monkey ok?! 

Maybe its true , but these monekeys exist in thailand since years already.... why didn't the government recognize the problem since senturies??

11 cases compared to? I mean what is this obsession to report harthcare statistics. Today's news... 3 cases of ringworm reported in the South 🙄

Monkey pox is actually from African monkeys not rats and is usually spread from person to person by direct contact. The current so called outbreak appears to be being spread as an STD so maybe the Thai government should start screening for it in the red light districts in the tourist destinations and big cities...
