After Covid-19 restrictions have ripped apart Thailand’s tourism economy throughout the past 2 years, the country’s deputy commerce minister is praising the government for relaxing policies this year. The deputy commerce minister, Sinit Lertkrai, said the policies are responsible for Phuket having a boom in new business registrations, according to a new report. The report was conducted by the Department of Business Development. The report claims that trade by restaurant businesses grew in the first quarter of 2022 by 83% since the same time last year. Hotel, resort, and condominium business trade grew up 169% in that time. Trade grew for spa businesses by 100%, and there was a 400% jump in trade for tour and travel reservation businesses.

Don't you love these percentages and the inter department love messages.

As you indicate, percentages are useless without the background pre-pandemic numbers. It’s classic feel good propaganda. Rest assured that if the underlying numbers were as positive as they are attempting to portray, they would be published. What we want to see is the following kind of numbers:

Businesses closed since March 2020?

New businesses opened?

I wish that were true mate. I’ve just posted about a similar upbeat tone used in the rental market in Phuket.

It seems self praise = improved foreign investment and a stronger currency. Thailand only has to talk about what may come soon and the Baht goes up 2%. In contrast, the Bank of England increases interest rates and nothing happens. A Number 10 insider mentions a problem with Larry the Cat  and the Pound falls by 2%.
