Airports of Thailand president says tourism won’t pick back up until October

Recommended Posts

While Phuket’s “Sandbox” travel scheme is poised to reopen the island to foreign tourists on July 1, Airports of Thailand doesn’t expect arrivals to really pick up until October, which is the start of Thailand’s “high season” for tourism. The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects 600,000 tourists to arrive between July and September, but AoT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn says the “Sandbox” scheme might not attract as many tourists as officials expect, adding that the island will be in its “low season” for tourism during the rainy months. Seems like it takes as high a font of knowledge as the AoT president to make these 2 remarks - brilliant, eh? - but he'll have had his kicks from having made the news . . . Thai officialdom at its typical best.

So we now have TAT versus AOT. Is TAT being over optimistic, positive in their attitude or unrealistic? Similarly is AOT being realistic (taking into account it is low season)  and travellers reservations regarding being amongst the pioneers for the sandbox trial or can AOT not see much light at the end of the tunnel for a few more months?

Someone has to start the ball rolling and whilst 'Operation Sandbox' hasn't been managed very well, it is a start. My personal view is that numbers of international visitors will be considerably lower than predicted by TAT. Some people may liken it to the movie 'JAWS'. 'Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water'.

The one thing we can hope for is that the sandbox trial is successful and the flood gates can slowly open (with caution).

As i said in my yesterday's post, this guy and airline's execs know real booking numbers. I will be watching Phuket arrivals next week, so far for domestic flights, out of 37 scheduled flights only 2 landed, the rest are cancelled

Who, indeed? . . . Fair question, but there's really no cause to 'like' yourself!

Your other, duplicated post was deleted.
