Suicide rates among Thai teenagers and young adults in Thailand have increased ‘alarmingly’ over the past five years, according to Thailand’s Department of Mental Health. The department’s director-general blames the high rates of suicide on increased stress caused by impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. When was the last time anyone saw a public service announcement on Thai TV or media for mental health services? Everyone knows the number to call the cops but a rare few know the number for the suicide prevention hotline. Stop the blame and lift your game Thailand.

It doesn't make sense to blame an increase of suicides (in any sector) over the past 5 years to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. It wasn't even around half of that time.

Public databases show a consistent, upward trend for 2013 - 2019 (which is especially pronounced if only males are considered), so reading here that that trend has continued in 2020 - 2021 isn't surprising. It'd be more interesting to know what portion of the increase over the past 2 years can plausibly be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic. I'm sure that it's a notable portion, but just comparing numbers ignoring trends as was done here gives a misleading narrative (I'm not against its conclusion, only against the throwing in of numbers that give a sense of finality/sureness/proportionality that isn't warranted).

We are currently mentoring a young lady and assisting with advice and support, to turn her life around from hopelessness to a light at the end of the tunnel. ie she sees a future without debt.

No, we are not paying her way out, she is doing it on her own (her way), she hasn't mentioned suicide directly but she may have been on the verge earlier.

There are plenty of middle class, educated Thais struggling under mountains of debt. Particularly Govt employees who seem to be given credit all too freely. 

Have heard stories of the 10% crowd even approaching graduates on graduation day. Then the inevitable borrowing more to pay the Interest to these thieves and onwards to the dead end of choices.

Financial management should be a compulsory subject in any educational degree in Thailand.
