Tuesday Covid Update: 4,059 new cases and 35 deaths

4,059 new Covid-19 cases and 35 coronavirus-related deaths were reported this morning by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration. In the recent and most severe wave of the coronavirus in Thailand, the CCSA has recorded 196,502 infections since April 1, making up the vast majority of Thailand’s total count since the start of the pandemic last year. The new wave of infections started in Bangkok’s nightlife districts and spread throughout Thailand, leading to outbreaks in crowded areas like factories, construction camps and Thailand’s overcrowded prisons. The case numbers have been very consistent over the past month and a bit of closures. That just means that the closures did nothing to combat the spread of covid. All the closures did was hurt the business owners that were forced to close.

You got it in one, there, Ryan, but regardless of the closures factor the present case numbers are cause for concern.

One of the key metrics missing in the government's reporting is the number of tests being run. Without that there is no way to determine the positivity rate so you can't tell whether the increase/flat/decrease in cases is reflecting the behavior of the spread or is some kind of artifact of varying numbers of tests being done. Thailand (based on the most recent numbers reported by worldometers) has only tested at a rate of about 11% compared to India at 28% or Malaysia at 42%. The test rate is better than Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, though. But these numbers don't come anywhere close to the 44 countries which have tested over 100% of their population.

Bottom line is that without better testing the CCSA's daily numbers are nothing more than a SWAG.
