With a glass half-full in one hand, and a calculator in the other, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is confident the country will see 300,000 tourists a month – potentially more towards the end of the year. Yuthasak Supasorn says his agency will meet with tourism operators on April 29, to discuss promotional strategies for the international market. He remains optimistic that every time Thailand further relaxes entry measures, tourism numbers will pick up, as happened in April when the requirement for a pre-departure PCR test was lifted. Despite the impending low season, Yuthasak says Thailand could welcome 300,000 visitors […]

So the lodging industry, which is already in dire financial straits is expected to supply an additional 2 million heavily discounted room nights! Dream on TAT. And as for the vague visitor numbers they bandie about I hope that someone is monitoring the reality over the next few months because with the problems of the Russian war only just beginning to hit people in the pocket there is likely to be a major decline in long haul tourism later in the year. British Airways pulling out of Bangkok just shows how little confidence there is in the market.

You have misunderstood the reason9s) for British Airways suspension of flights. The motive has little to do with Thailand. BA cancelled 200+ Eu & Mediterranean flights until October as well. It suspended service to Miami, Tokyo and Hong Kong for the summer.  The airline is going through a Covid19 related meltdown because so many of its personnel are infected with Covid. As well,  staff laid off during the height of the pandemic when no one was flying have not been fully replaced. It takes time to train the personnel, assuming that the airline can even find the people. There is a labour shortage at every airline.

It is reasonable to expect tourist numbers to increase significantly once high season starts. We are almost out the Covid crisis and the Russian economic problems  really won't impact  the tourists who  travel. What matters is if China allows its people to travel. Travel demand has rebounded in the western world.

I wish there was a daily monitor to track incoming tourists. Would be nice to see how each change impacted the numbers and how long it took for it to happen.

I think Thailand will be fine once they remove the insurance and Thai pass but it will never reach pre covid levels ever again imo. Too many tourists explored new options that are easier/cheaper/closer that they will probably revisit and other countries opened slightly early and allowed people to get their holidays done earlier.

The war in Russia will ensure the numbers won't reach those levels as well as that was one of the biggest tourist groups.

The first quarter (high season) only saw 450,000 or so for all three months from another story. So the idea that numbers will double during the low season is very wishful thinking.

Of all the measures to leave in place, insurance provides the least benefit. How many people actually needed to draw on the insurance because of a severe covid infection during their holiday? Frankly A tourist is more likely to have a cardiac issue before and after covid yet insurance was never required.

It’s a solution in search of a problem. meanwhile it deters people from visiting.

Oh yeah and Malaysia just ended outdoor masking. Also “bars” have been closed for more than a year “officially”.

People do their research and the message from the Thai government is still: Don’t come here to have fun.
