Their GPS navigation system led them off the edge of the road, causing their car to drop 10 metres and land in a drainage canal. The women managed to escape the car just in time. At around 12:30am this morning, officers from Kabinburi police station received a report of a car sinking with people trapped inside. By the time the rescue team arrived, 30 year old Poonika Jittham […]

It seems like GPS leading to water is a common issue in Thailand. I wonder what type of application they are using for traveling, unless the driver has lost concentration of the road ahead. I have been using GPS for traveling in different counties. Yes, there are times it runs haywire due to signal issues. Just stop for few seconds and it will be back to normal. The important is just stay focus on the road ahead....simple as that

Thai Government needs to change the Driving License requirement …. How to program GPS and not drive into water or canal. It won’t stop this happening because having a Thai drivers license doesn’t mean person can drive or follow road rules etc. Amazing that Thais blindly follow the GPS, but never follow the road rules.

“The relevant agencies have been informed and will implement lights, signs and barricades at the bend in the road to prevent such an incident from happening again”.

Take out a few words and replace them with the contextual appropriate ones and this could be useful for many Thai agencies going forward !

No requirement to do that, just release the statement on April 1st …..

Clearly the maps are totally to blame and the GPS units are imploding in confusion with bright flashes temporarily blinding the ever alert and highly competent drivers.

'The bend did not have signs to warn drivers of the sharp curve and steep drop nor any metal barricades to prevent cars falling off the edge.'

it's never their own stupidity in Thailand always something else to blame!

What utter garbage unless this was a Tesla running on full autopilot? No GPS system would lead you off the edge of the road. It may make you take a wrong turn and find yourself with a canal in front of you, or even a dead end, but this story is nonsense. More likely they fell asleep, was on their phone, watching a movie or just plain drunk.

If people would like to volunteer I could take them  on a GPS  directed street near my  village that if followed would embed them into the side of a  house ! Have tested it twice . Is real !

Autopilot is just advanced cruise control though, so any car on cruise control could end up like that if you don't pay attention.
