Yesterday, Human Rights Watch accused Australia’s ambassador to Myanmar of “lending credibility” to Myanmar’s junta government. HRW’s criticism came after the ambassador met with the junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, as well as one of Myanmar’s state-owned media outlets on Wednesday to discuss “cooperation” in various sectors. HRW Myanmar researcher Manny Maung said the meeting hurt global efforts to hold the chief accountable for human rights abuses. “By taking photo ops and accepting gifts, Australia only serves to lend credibility to a military junta that is accused of committing war crimes…”. Last month, a human rights organisation, along with Yale […]

Gasp, told off by Human Rights Watch! Oh the shame! Meh.

Sorry @Poolie, but you simply don't understand; Human Rights are inherent Rights that Humans have when they aren't forcibly taken away by the Chinese Communist Party behind closed borders and the 'Great FireWall' of censorship. They are wonderful things; I hope that one day you get to experience them.

Good on HRW for calling out the Aussie government. It is a duplicitous act on the part of the Aussies to legitimize, even a little bit, the murderous bastards who are killing their own people in Burma. And no, Australia's excuse that the meeting was to "...call for Myanmar to cease violence and release detainees..." is not a good reason; you don't have 'Tea and a Chat' with mass-murderers and politely ask them to... er... ahem... 'Cool it'.

It is terribly sad that the events in Ukraine have overshadowed the events in Burma; the people in Burma also merit our support in trying to create a fair and just society.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Military/Fascistic types just went away and allowed good people to create societies and cultures that make you proud? Life is short, and it should be enjoyed and treasured, not harassed and hurt.

What an awful species we are.

It’s called diplomacy not legitimization. HRW are good and all that stuff but dismissing the intention of the meeting makes them sound like a pack of politically immature whiners. Instead of saying “That’s a start. What’s next?” HRW does the exact opposite. “Saw you with your junta buddies. You’re just as bad as them. I’m telling Mum!”

Unfortunately you can find a lot of them in this forum too especially in Ukraine-Russia war topics.

Sad to see this two face government colluding with Junta. I am ashamed of my country's action if the call out is true

No. Burma Ambassadors should be Withdrawn & Embassies Closed. Resident Ambassadors if summoned must meet Host Govt. by Diplomacy Rules.

Agree as pointless & bad image for any Aus.Govt initiative to meet Junta who can only be stopped & removed by force.

Unless meth or rice is in short supply Thailand has no reason to invade Myanmar. And there’s no oil there so Westerners won’t do jack squat. Winnie the Pooh must have his eyes on Myanmar so he can keep building his Asia sized railway set. Until then draining the economy by the copious consumption of govt supplied tea and scones will have to suffice. And we need ambassadors for that, the fatter the better.
