News Forum - Phuket governor Narong plans road safety campaign ahead of Songrkan

Recommended Posts

Phuket governor Narong is planning a road safety campaign ahead of Sonkran with a goal of zero casualties during the holiday. The dates for the campaign, called Seven Days of Danger, have yet to be announced. Last year, the campaign focused on ending drunk driving, and inspecting “risk points” where accidents had happened. 21 people were injured, and one person was killed, in road accidents during Songkran last year. Across Thailand, 277 people were killed, and 2,357 were injured in almost 2,400 road accidents. Drunk driving was involved in over one third of the accidents. Ever since a motorcycle hit […]

I literally can not find the words to describe my frustration with these types of “initiatives”.

The road accidents and fatalities in Thailand could be halted almost overnight if they took simple and easy steps. Just enforce the Ef’in laws that are already in place. Get cops out on bikes and cars and stop people tailgating, Lane switching, having no brake lights, using phones etc etc. Get celebrities on Tv calling out the stupidity of drink driving. Make it a shameful act rather than normal behaviour. None of these things are difficult to do. They are all within the capability of the government to enforce right now. Starting today.

These Songkran initiatives are utter garbage. We can write the headlines for next week “PM Prayut orders governors to have zero road death”  Then we will all have to witness the tents set up at the side of the roads. Plastic chairs set out and a handful of police and officials standing around “waiting to help”. What’s wrong with service stops. There are thousands throughout the country. Such facilities may have been needed in 1970 Thailand, but not today. Move on and modernise your thoughts and ideas FFS!

1. All vehicles are restricted from being on any Phuket roads between the hours of 0000 - 2000.

2. No pedestrians allowed on roads at any time.

3. The Thai police will be fully active during this period to fine all tourists that break rules. Any rules.

4. Vehicles not allowed on any roads between 1900 and 0200.

The article about the street vendor that had set up tables and chairs on a pedestrian crossing pretty much sums the problem. A lack of driver training, a totally inadequate testing process, and last but very far from least, policing that has more to do with soliciting contributions to the Police Benevolent Fund than it has with enforcement of the traffic laws.

Absolutely. And ALL could be solved by lunchtime tomorrow. This is not difficult. It’s been done already many times around the world. Just do it….
