Yesterday, the Centre for Medical Genomics Ramathibodi Hospital confirmed tests of Thailand’s first case of the new recombinant variant, a hybrid of the BA.1 and BA.2 variants. Let me guess: no deaths so far with this new variant, and appears milder, but just to be safe we should shut the economy down and restrict basic rights?

There has been ZERO discussion about 'shutting down the economy'. #dramamuch

News of new Covid variants is tiring and unnecessary unless it’s something that actually affects public health

Exactly. In the US there are headlines that say new variant makes up 30% of new cases. But they fail to mention that new cases and deaths are steadily declining every day.

If it still has Omicron attached to it, is there real need to worry?

For health issues, no. But if you are a potential tourist, yes. Entry rules will continue longer. So every tourist entering is still at risk of being incarcerated for 2 weeks. Which is not a nice way to start a 3 week holiday.

The new revelations comes amid a surge in Covid infections in the UK, which has again reached record levels, with an estimated 1 in 13 people infected with the virus in the past week.

Where do they get these figures from????

1 in 13 would mean that over 5 million people in the UK were infected in the past week!

According to UK gov. there were just over half million in the 7 days to April 1st.

One in 13 INFECTED people, NOT 1/13 of all people in GB are infected

The article says “record cases” and  “an estimated 1 in 13 people infected with the virus in the past week.”

@Loongcorrectly notes this is not supported by the data anywhere.

Some 4.9 million people were estimated to have the coronavirus in the week ending 26 March, up from 4.3 million recorded in the previous week, the Office for National Statistics said Friday.

Interesting. So the estimate is based off supposed “random” sampling but doesn’t show up in the testing data.
