he wasn't kicked out, that was the scandal

he resigned as a member of the Academy, a lot of actors are, as a sign of repence

he was going to be kicked out of the Academy anyway, so just saving face

mind you, he can join back later, and he will

they are just making a statement and sending a message, #meetoo style

Two Points:

1 Nothing creates more publicity than some outrageous act.  Madonna has done that for years.  This was a staged publicity stunt to create press coverage.

2. Who Cares about what Will Smith did or did not do.

With a little bit of imagination, they could incorporate that slap into the movie.  Oscar time?
