A woman in Phuket told the press yesterday that a police officer at Thalang Police Station threatened to charge her with prostitution if she didn’t pay 50,000 baht in monthly payments of 5,000 baht. The payment is allegedly for her car, which police threatened to seize as evidence of her committing prostitution. The woman claims the officer first contacted her for a “personal service” in October, and they agreed to meet in a hotel room in Phuket town. Corruption - especially when commited by public employees - is a venom killing the trust of the public into the fairness, independence and rightfullness of the administration.

I would wholeheartedly endorse if Thailand would commit itself to combat/root out bribery and corruption, starting with those ominous 500 THB-fines traffic officers dish out generously, but I have (sadly) little hope to see this happen any time soon.

It starts at the top. If the PM and his cronies want to continue to tolerate this behavior with no real consequences for the perpetrators, then it will continue indefinitely. You can’t just “reassign” the officers. They need to be investigated, charged and given appropriate sentences if found guilty

The officer claims his superior officer approved this since he knew the officer is struggling financially to care for his elderly mother.

The officer and superior officer are stationed at Thalang Police station.   Okaaaayyy.

A major general in Phuket says he has ordered the Thalang Police Station to investigate the officer, and insists he will be prosecuted according to the law.

So what happens now,  the officer investigates himself for illegallities approved by his superior and reports to said superior what??

This Major General in Phuket must be on drugs.

This case stinks, all around. The answer of course would be to decriminalize prostitution. But then, what about face? What about hush money?
