News Forum - Thailand government warns of jail time for selling unripe durian

Recommended Posts

It’s durian season in Thailand, and the government is reminding farmers and vendors that they can go to jail for harvesting and selling unripe durian. Yes, they said jail. There’s even a minimum level of dryness of the fruit’s flesh set by Thai authorities to determine the freshness of each variety. Durian is known as the “king of fruit” with a pungent smell so strong that it is banned at many hotels and even Bangkok’s MRT mass transit system. While ripe durian has a unique taste with a rich custard texture, unripe durians with pale flesh do not taste good. […]

Durians that ripe perfectly would actually drop from the tree themselves. Maybe instead of a law to prevent selling unripe durians, there should be a law to prevent plucking durians from the tree and then applying ethylene (or worse calcium carbide) onto the stem to induce artificial ripening.

How do they tell if unripe? By the smell?

By measurement:

For popular varieties, officials have even set harvesting schedules and a minimum percentage of dryness for the fruit. The Kradum variety can be harvested from March 20 with a dryness of at least 27%. The “Chanee” and “Puang Manee” can be harvested from April 10 with a dryness of at least 30%. The “Mon Thong” can be harvested from April 25 with a dryness of at least 32%.

But seriously will there be a government official with the equipment to randomly check durian samples at the market?

I'm not familiar with this dryness measuring method. From where I come from we measure the sugar level of the durian with a Brix Refractometer. The more ripe a durian the higher the sugar level.

someone needs to fill those empty beds in jails, since kratom dealers are let go free. and red bull brat is still walking free

What beds? They sleep on concrete floors with a maximum of 2 blankets. And Thailand  is reducing their prison population to conform with ASEAN guidelines. Covid was a convenient excuse for that. And it is totally coincidental that several ex govt members received decades long sentences that have now been slashed with numerous amnesties /s
