I lived in Thailand for four years-- November, 2004-November, 2007, and then again for a year from 2009-2010.  One of the very clear differences was that the foreigners always seemed abrasive for the most part, in the use of their language, English, German, American (as distinct from English) and the Thais weren't.  And because we were in Thailand, the Thais just kind of absorbed this turbulent character with their arms waving, and other disruptive uses of language.  Now I'm in the states and can't wait to get back to a land where tranquility is the norm, and not foreigner clown antics.  I think it has a lot to do with the difference in the languages:  For example, in English, the little light and lovely wide-winged insect is a "butter-fly."  Yuck.  In Thailand it is "pee-sua," which translates into "ghost shirt."  Now that's something I can sit back and get tranquil about while watching them flit around and avoiding the foreigners who look like they're trying to imitate them!
