So there is some poor reporting here. Question to ask the reporter, how in a police raid do the Thai police know that the underage girls were offering sexual services …. Unless they were offering sexual services to the cops that raided the establishment. Allegedly the police were not offered any favours so they allegedly charged the madam of the establishment. Good to see this is not fake news as the person has been tried and found guilty already for this alleged injustice.

Offering sexual services or not, they were still underage, the minimum age to work in Thailand in any bar, or restaurant serving alcohol, is 18. Possibly a setup, some of the NGO's are well known for this ("concerned citizen" is the one to look for here), possibly a reminder to all the other bars that contributions to the Police Benevolent Fund should be made in full and on time - but regardless, if they were knowingly offering underage girls for sex, then they should have the book thrown at them.

As bars are still closed, I wonder what was on the dinner menu. Yes the management should have the book thrown at them, but definitely holes in the story here.

You may be interested to know, it’s not just serving alcohol …. where the minimum age limit is 18 …

An employer should not employ a child under the age of 18 to perform job in the following workplace:

  • Slaughterhouses
  • Gambling houses, casinos
  • Entertainment places, according to the law on entertainment places
  • Establishments where food, liquor, tea or other beverages are served, and where the services of prostitutes, sleeping facilities, or massage are offered, etc and other places as prescribed in Ministerial regulations.

Not just restaurants that serve alcohol are out, but also ones that serve food.
But as Gambling is illegal in Thailand interestingly they have a law for employment of children in Gambling houses and Casinos. Also same goes for, we have been told by Thai government that, there is no Prostitution in Thailand.

The alleged agent was charged with human trafficking, sex trafficking, encouraging children to commit crimes, and opening a bar without permission. The teenage girls were taken away by authorities and will be supported accordingly.

I was slightly dubious about trafficking charges in a stationary context (but OK), very dubious about children committing crimes (which would mean they're personally liable), and non-interested in opening a bar without a SHA++++ permit (that's just throwing the book). The thing that really set me thinking is what the closener "[...] supported accordingly" means. Haven't got a clue.

It means fed, watered, sheltered, generally looked after as young girls should be.

Reported by an NGO or maybe flies as a non profit. I actually know a thai guy who heads one of these type of organizations here in Thailand. Told me some stories and it is a very difficult job to win against trafficking especially if the gals are of age. As for these younger girls it is clear cut against the law, but who knows if they are or have been sold bought and owned or not. .

It would have been a sting operation before the uniformed cops appeared.A foreigner working with the cops would have bar fined the girl and headed off to a short time room to be later met by the cops. Pressure applied, girl tells all, bar gets busted. Mamma San is looking at many years in the slammer for selling underage girls.

Not hard to imagine someone seeing something and then saying something to the police that triggered an investigation and subsequent raid

It's the army controlling the police in this case. And it's the Lumphini district only affecting Soi 4 / Soi 11 also. So everybody is suffering like a domino effect because of this...

In this case, it does not really matter. Trafficking a 14 year old and getting taken down (by whomever) is a win in my book.
