The Tourism Authority of Thailand says thousands of Russian holidaymakers are stranded in the kingdom as flight cancellations and sanctions over the war on Ukraine hit hard. According to Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya from the TAT, there are currently 3,100 Russian tourists stranded on Phuket, over 2,000 on Koh Samui, as well as Russian holidaymakers in Krabi, Phang Nga, and Bangkok. International sanctions imposed on Russia as a result of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine are affecting Russian tourists, with many Russian carriers forced to cancel flights and global payment systems suspending their services. Put them Russians on a bus and off they go to Myanmar. They are big buddies and I am sure their credit cards will work over there.

Well, being stranded in Thailand is certainly better than being in Ukraine subjected to artillery shelling and bombardment by Russia.

Thailand seems to not understamd that the tourism from Russia has come to an end for now. The Russian commercial fleet of Airbus and Boeing jets is hit hard by the sanctions and is likely to be grounded, and since the Rubel dropped in value Thailand is not not a cheap holiday destination for Russians anymore.

If Thailand considers to circumvent the sanctions imposed on Russia by introducing the "Mir" payment system (isn't it ironic that "Mir" means "peace" in Russian?) Thailand is playing with the fire and might be sibjected with sanctions too. And, as indicated above, this will not salvage the tourism from Russia.

Let the Russian embassy take care of their people instead of financing yet another Muay Thai training facility on Phuket. This is Russias problem in the first place.

Not the best time to be Russian or being neutral.

If Thailand tries to circumvent the sanctions she is risking  being sanctioned also. Meanwhile any Russians left stranded in Thailand can be treated in the same way as they have treated refugees from Myanmar until the Russian Embassy arranges their repatriation as nothing to do with air space Russia is a big Country 60% of which is in Asia.

This story of family with 3 kids arriving on Feb. 27. Talk about bad timing.

No one being able to help them from home. Long circuitous route back through Muslim countries. Might not be fun with kids age 2,4, and 7. I wouldn't like to be in their shoes.

Qatar Airways still has flights to Moscow. So what's the problem for Russian tourists?

Ukrainian tourists cannot fly back of course. Those are the ones that need help. But their credit cards should still function. So they might be able fly back to Turkey or Poland.

Yeah, I think Warsaw would be their destination. I thought maybe L'viv would remain relatively untouched but that's no longer the case. Russia going very deep with their destruction. Of course their intel would be very very detailed on various military installations as Russia military personnel would have had pretty easy access to current info pre-operation and/or pre-2014.

"However, Russian carrier Aeroflot has been forced to cancel flights as a result of international airspace restrictions. "

Bull...t, Almost none of the asian countries have closed their air space, as long as an aircraft stays east of the Baltic then, no problem.

some 55% of AFs aircraft are leased and the owners want them back.  The rest consist largely of old and basically unsuitable aircraft for international routes and are mainly confined to domestic flights. .

BUT …. Not according to the local tourism office. Sounds like the TAT is doing it’s famous guesstimate again.

Most Russian tourists seem to be coping with being stranded in Phuket by flight cancellations resulting from the Russian war on Ukraine, according to the local tourism office.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/2279043/few-callers-to-russian-ukrainian-tourist-help-centre

Some tourists had already contacted the Russian embassy and were waiting for it to arrange  flights back to Russia, and they had no payment problems because they had adequate funds, she said.

People get what they (the majority) voted for - in case of Russia this is Putin.

Russians can safely return home, there are flights from Turkish Airlines, Qatari Airways… they just want to sit in a beautiful country and cry falsely while their brothers kill innocent people in Ukraine!  it is impossible to return to Ukraine and this is a big problem.  so do not confuse Ukrainians and Russians - these are completely different situations, ABSOLUTELY!

Your funny...

Do you actually know how flight registration works... S7 for example does all its registrations through Bermuda - How would they be capable of paying these as no outbound money travels from Russia?

We found this out the hardway as that was the only direct from the russian part directly above bangkok and in the same timezone.

Over 500 Russian leased aircraft lose their certification on 28 March, after that, they will no longer be able to fly internationally.

It already start beginning of march. As my wife was supposed to sit on one S7 flight the 9th of March but that didn't fly due to losing certification.

The aviation authorities of Bermuda have suspended airworthiness certificates for Russian aircraft in the meantime as the Boeing and Airbus planes cannot be properly maintained w/o the original parts.

That said, the Russian Boeing/Airbus is virtually grounded plus the leasing companies are required to cancel the leases.

But since Thailand hasn't closed its airspace for Russian planes it is possible to evacuate Russians using Tupulev or Illyushin planes.

So indeed like stated before help the Russians and Ukrainians.

There are still flights from Qatar and Abu Dhabi to Moscow. So Russians can fly back if they want. If I were Russian I would not want to fly back of course. I would try to stay as long as possible. Until my visa expires...

TAT more concerned about Russians than Russia's Embassy. Make these Russians Covid Positive and they have the funds from insurance to go back in an exclusive quarantine flight
