Officers charged the suspect with bringing a weapon to a public area without permission and assault which led to physical and mental harm.

Sounds more like attempted murder to me.

To be honest I'm surprised there are not more incidents involving people with possible mental health issues in Thailand.

The Thai system seems to pretty much ignore any form of mental illness. With a combination of job losses, rising debts, homelessness , drug and alcohol abuse I think this incident is only the tip of a large iceberg caused in part by the Countries lack of care towards those truly in need of help .

There most likely are, just under reported. Either that or the data is gathered by the same people who define “Unemployed” leading to ridiculously low unemployment data.

Never ever heard or seen a Thai Cop with a stun gun. Just a long pole with a u shape on the end to pin the guy. Is this the dawning of the age ...... of the stun gun?

Its about time.  Tasers are now standard issue for US police.

I doubt it. Thai cops have to pay for their own guns and uniforms etc and they get paid terrible wages. It is ridiculous and breeds corruption.

CORRECTION - Thai cops get free guns and uniforms but, apparently, they are rubbish.

SOURCE - Brother in law is a cop.

I'm not really sure how much they really need them here. But a luntatic with a knife probably is easier with a taser, but they have been doing a really good job subduing this kind of person as said before they use a long pole with a u piece welded on the front and then they gang rush the person which seems to work quite well.

yep, for example by patrolling those areas for something else than closing bars and harassing foreigners who have a drink. Same for ladyboys thieves and crap like that.

I'm not sure there is any problem in human society more intractable than mental illness. Who's to say who's mentally ill? What if someone is definitely ill (by whatever standard) but declines treatment, as many do?

If you've ever tried to talk to mentally ill people, you know how difficult it can be. Many of them do not want help. Serious mental illness often makes its victim absolutely certain that they are not mentally ill.

My point is, what exactly do you expect people to do? The situation could be improved by imprisoning people for acting weird, but that invites a slew of other problems.

You make good points about refusing treatment but here in Thailand the treatment is imprisonment and release without any form of psychiatric assessment or intervention. At what point to you decide someone is a danger to themselves and others. I'm not saying forced institutions are the way forward always but at least a 3 day assessment in a controlled environment by qualified professionals would be a big step forward in Thailand. Some people need help and medication they will never receive if left to their own devices.

Why are you criticizing the  police here? What did they do that was wrong? The alleged attacker was subdued quickly.  If the police stopped and searched everyone at Nana that looked mentally ill, it would require hundreds of police officers, and I expect you would be the first to complain about the draconian police  presence.  There are mentally ill people everywhere.
