Elephants regularly cross this highway, Highway 1399, to move between different feeding areas. The signs warn drivers that the speed limit is 60 kilometres per hour, and they risk imprisonments and fines if they hit elephants. The pickup truck is just one of several cars that have hit elephants on Highway 1399. On February 1, a van hit another elephant there. Officials have also discovered […]

If you hit an elephant even at 60 kph, hopefully people know their car and maybe themselves will be toast. And that’s not taking into account the injury to the elephant. As an expat, I have to abide by the rules of another country and culture. As drivers, humans should use their awareness of elephants and the territory they’re driving though to make better decisions. Maybe a pipe dream?

speedbumps, over a strech  of 1km before the crossing on each site of it. the nastiest speedbumps available. the time of friendly warnings should be over.

Same about 25 metres before pedestrian crossings - hit one at over 20kph and you and your bike are going over. That will stop all the bikes racing through the crossings. I heard that most accidents at crossings involve bikes.

Most road accidents & road deaths here involve bikes. 80% total or 20k dead annually😞😫

Yes I am aware of that sad fact.  But unlike most bike accidents/deaths that involve other vehicles, most accidents to pedestrians are caused by bikes.  As you would know bike riders in Thailand do not obey the laws, and travelling along between other vehicles at a faster rate is normal - as is using the footpaths in the road is busy - that is why they hit so many pedestrians.  Anyone using crossings in Thailand learns that you must watch the cars as they will usually not slow down, but you much especially watch out for the bikes flying along between the cars - and also those going in the wrong direction - and both ways when walking on the footpaths.
