From tomorrow, Vietnam will lift Covid-19 curbs on international flights from all markets, with no limits on flight numbers. According to a Reuters report, the state-run newspaper Tuoi Tre confirmed the decision yesterday, citing Dinh Viet Son from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam. Last time I checked, flight frequencies were a matter for airlines and passenger demand. I wish them luck, but interasia travel is severly handicapped still.

After the Philippines now another nail in the coffin for the ambition of TAT to get tourism numbers up, at least as long as the entry programmes remain as costly and cumbersome as they currently are.

This said, I somehow feel that the current T&G/Sandbox programmes will not last very long. Let's see what the numbers of inbound tourists for the 2nd half of February will tell. I predict no substantial increase (rather more to the contrary), which is a pretty safe bet in my eyes.

Mind you allowing inbound flights is still not the same as really opening up for tourists as so far they've only let in a handful of tourists on special packaged tours in a select few areas

The government started allowing foreign tourists in under a vaccine passport program last November. So far, nearly 9,000 foreign arrivals have been welcomed under the program with several pre-set conditions and constraints, half of them Vietnamese overseas coming to see their relatives.

Under the program, Khanh Hoa, Kien Giang, Quang Nam, Quang Ninh, Binh Dinh, HCMC and Da Nang are the only localities foreign tourists can visit.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had assigned the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Tuesday to work with relevant agencies to announce a roadmap for full tourism resumption soon.

The reopening should happen no later than the end of April and ideally at the end of March, Chinh said.

At the moment Vietnam is not issuing tourist Visas on Arrival. When that happens the nation is "open".

Two weeks ago there were no visas being issued in embassies abroad, either.

Right now it's business people and essential employees - work permits required -  regardless of how many flights there are.
