Why don’t farangs wear masks when around Thai people?  It’s rude and inconsiderate of the local Thai people, who you see all wearing masks properly. If they can figure out how to wear a mask why can’t farangs?05F211B3-7FD2-411B-BD42-1E65666FEF71.thumb.jpeg.8232a5f79ce58f6bd3d5cfce3429daaa.jpeg

We are all old and stupid.  555  except me.

Indoors I always wear a mask, outside on small sois I walk down I usually take it off, then put on if on a major soi or a lot of people are around

In Malls I see mostly eastern european and russian men and women not wearing masks.... They have them on to get in then take them off.

You ever walk by a massage parlor on second road, beach road or any soi in Pattaya?

None of the Thai massage ladies outside are wearing masks, so no, not  "always farangs"

Maybe the same reason Thai's dont bother with crash helmets. Which offer a damn sight more protection than a silly bit of cloth

Thai culture, like most Asian cultures, is a very conformist, high-context culture. Most "farang" are from western cultures where personal liberties are historically prioritized, hence why some are willing to be a bit more rebellious.

Love it

Also it is not true.  I witnessed yesterday a baht bus loaded with Thai's.  At least half of them were not wearing a mask while riding.

And yes, the Thai's don't wear helmets, load their motorcycles with three of more passengers, race between cars, and run traffic lights.  All conduct that is far more hazardous to ones health than that 5 baht mask provides against Covid.

We Westerns are taught since the very moment we are born to value the individual over the group. Asians on the other hand tend to value the group over the individual.

From this point of view, it makes very little sense for us to wear surgical masks, provided they barely offer any protection to the one wearing it; but they instead protect others so long as everyone wears it. (N95 would make more sense for us).

Having said that, when in Asia one must be considerate and follow their rules. I'm sure most of those fellas that don't wear masks in Thailand because of their western "freedom loving" rhetorics, would criticize immigrants in their country for not following the customs of his country.... Bit hypocritical.

Mostly The right wing people who don’t believe in the Virus until they get it!

Freedom dummies who believe they are free to do what they want even in a foreign country?

I believe they should fine these people on the spot and take their keys away if driving until fines are paid!

Better yet Black list them to ever come back and if they don’t pay !

Get them at the airports when leaving or lock them up until the fine is paid!

You must be tough with anti maskers

Most right wing people I know (from Europe) take the virus more serious than anyone! I've found it's mostly the Americans with their freedom taking rhetorics and conspiracy theories that refuse to wear masks.

I visit a lot of companies outside Bangkok and from the industrial park security officers to the drivers and labourers hardly any Thai wear their masks there. In Bangkok it's the usual facesaving in my opinion.

Come on man, this is common sense, because they are not going anywhere nor flying outside of Thailand

Maybe it has to do with the fact that most Thai do not have access to, or cannot read info about this issue other than in their own language. Follow the main stream media, anywhere, and you get the governments version of their "reality". Dive into alternative sources and another version appears.

You're right, but no need to shout by bolding.

its got far more to do with farang arrogance and stupidity, in some, than in Thais ignorance of the rules. They know well enough what they should be doing, on both sides of the divide.

But, shouldn't farangs know better regarding mask wearing when "inside" a

I see both.  I see many Thai's inside stores with masks below their noses.  Also, you have a virus that was so transmittable that the Chinese were studying it within the highest BLS-4 level containment lab.  And you really want anyone to believe that the cloth mask sewn by the Thai or the 5 baht mask purchased at 7-11 provides protection.  It is nothing more than the feather carried by Dumbo to give him the illusion he could fly.

It matters not what some Thais do ( very few in my view do not wear masks in the general public, at least in my area) or the effectiveness of masks, or our own personal opinions. We either respect the laws here, such as they are, or you should not  come to visit here, or live here. It really is that simple.

Interesting, you use the word "respect" with laws... I follow them because the state uses the threat of fines and/or deportation.
