A report by one real estate consultancy says domestic vacationers, not international tourists, will probably make up the majority of Phuket hotel guests in 2022. After a peak of 5.3 million arrivals at Phuket hotels in 2019, the arrivals dropped by 80% in 2020 to only 1.1 million. Real estate consultants will always paint a bright picture. Maybe TAT recruits them to keep an upbeat vibe?? In reality, these tourist spots are kept going by international tourists, not local tourists. Locals have been subjected to restrictions, job losses and deprivation. They have little desire to spend scarce money on holidays. It would be better to reinstate Test and Go as it was and hope to salvage the high season than waste resources on local tourism, which all over Thailand has been a failure.
