This is a tragic outcome for this family. Maybe now the Thai Givernment might take teaching children to swim, seriously. Community pools or pools in each school where children can learn to swim from a young age. There is also a lesson here for parents with very young children. Whenever they are close to water, they should be no further than arms length away and closely supervised.

Kids out in the sticks play in the ponds, regular occurrences of drowning, good luck with schools having a pool, or even community ones.

Such a heartbreaking incident. It's surprising to hear that 5 children per day drown in Thailand and it's the leading cause of death for children under 15. I would have guessed that motorcycle crashes would have been the number one cause. Where I live, which isn't that rural, families regularly allow their children, well under the age of 15, to drive motorcycles on the roads. Often without helmets and in flip flops etc.
