Recommended Posts

Thai officials are seeking Singapore’s cooperation in freezing the assets of Juthamas Siriwan, who previously served as governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. She was sentenced to 50 years’ imprisonment on corruption charges related to the hosting of the Bangkok International Film Festival between 2002-2007. According to a Bangkok Post report, Ittiporn Kaewthip and Prayut Phetkun from the Office of the Attorney General, along with Jumpon Phansumrit from the International Affairs Department, issued a joint summary yesterday in which they confirmed that while the criminal case against Juthamas ended with her imprisonment, the civil case is still ongoing. It’s […]

Why were Juthamas Siriwan and her daughter prosecuted and convicted to the full extent of the law while other criminals like them are let off with a slap on the wrist or nothing at all? 50 years for a 1.8 million dollar bribe... There must be thousands of other worse offenders out there who were never even prosecuted - and for worse offenses. I am not saying Juthamas is not guilty, it just looks like she is being singled out. She obviously did not have good enough connections - or she made someone really powerful really angry.

Hello, @AlecTand welcome to the forum! I can only agree with your every word, with is 'ancient' case being just one of the countless inequitable legal outcomes in a country where very little makes good and fair sense. But, one day, maybe . . . one day, things might mend.

She abused her office. And embarrassed her country in a high profile event.

The more high profile sentences like this may make people think twice before asking for a bribe.

Why is an anti-bribery case assumed to exist only because other bribery didn't happen?

Can't anything happen or not happen for any other possible reason?

And I agree it's a pretty harsh sentence.

50 years sounds like a long time but she won’t even serve 10 years. Jailed 2017. Appeals finished in 2020 so her sentence was final and she became eligible for royal pardons. 2 years later she will be excellent class and eligible for a 50% sentence reduction from any royal pardon and any criminal fine wiped. 50/2= 25 years new sentence. Another royal pardon 2 years later 25/2=12.5 years new sentence less time served of 7 years= 5.5 remaining to served. Eligible for parole at 1/3 served of new 12.5 year sentence = 4y2m. Served 7 total by then so she’ll walk. If she serves even 7 or more it will be because she refuses to co-operate with the repatriation of “her” assets. Hold the sympathy ;-)
