News Forum - Survey shows many Thais suffering suicidal thoughts and depression during pandemic

Recommended Posts

A recent survey shows that many Thais are enduring suicidal thoughts, depression, and burnout as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Amporn Benjaponpitak from the Department of Mental Health says the online poll assessed the mental health of over 2.5 million people in Thailand. A Thai PBS World report carries a breakdown of some of the results. Over 8% of respondents, or 216,098 people say they’re suffering from stress. Nearly 10%, or 254,243, say they’re depressed. Over 5%, or 140,939, are deemed at risk of committing suicide. Over 4%, or 25,552 people, say they have feelings of burnout. Amporn has […]

If this High Tourist Season goes bust, as it seems to be doing, you can triple or quadruple these figures.

I have said this before and will say it again; every single Thai person that I know involved in the tourism business has re-scheduled their debts for the end of High Tourist Season/Songkran in the hope that they will have some cash then. They have almost all exhausted legal borrowing from banks (those that could get a loan) and have turned to the loan sharks. They have put up as collateral houses, cars, their family farms/land, their children's school fees, their wives, their daughters, etc., etc., etc.

My admiration for Thai people's financial juggling and ability to live on the cheap when needed knows no bounds, but I think it has finally come to a point where the last ball is being tossed and the last body can fit into shared housing.

Household debt was a big, serious issue in Thailand just before Covid hit. Does anyone think that Thais have been paying down debts for the last two years?

And, those that don't live in tourism-dependent areas or don't have family who are tourism-dependent for their incomes; do you think you are going to escape unscathed?

I am not a religious man, but I'd be going to the Temples and praying that tourists are able to come back in February/March/April, otherwise things are going to get...

...Interesting indeed.

Very interesting.

So sad. RIP Thailand. I pray for these poor people, I pray that they have discernment to see the lies from the truth. But I fear that relief is not going to come, with how draconian and ridiculous these polices are. I can't imagine how many people have committed suicide due to the purposeful mutilation of this country.

it's not the virus that is destroying lives, it's the policies enacted and the draconian laws that make little to no sense in trying to "stop" a virus from spreading...  All the Thai Government cares about is keeping numbers low.

Omicron, is about to change the numbers and there's nothing the Thai Government, or any government can do to stop it. Look at my country now. 100,000 cases in one day. And that is only part of the total picture. We can't get RATs because there aren't any to buy. Testing queues are long for PCR tests. So health authorities are flying blind. Mental health issues experienced in Thailand are found all around the world. What worked las year won't work this year.
